My dad didn’t want to buy me a bike.
父ちゃんはぼくに自転車を買いたがらなかった。
He was always saying [that children are so careless and they hurt themselves].
子どもというものはとても不注意で、けがをするものだと父ちゃんはいつも言っていた。
I was always telling Dad [that I’d be very careful].
とっても注意するってぼくは父ちゃんにいつでも言っていた。
Then I cried.
それから、ぼくは泣いた。
Then I said [o I was going to run away from home].
それから、家出するぞってぼくは言った。
In the end Dad said [o I could have a bike if I came in the top ten in the math test].
最後には、もしもぼくが算数の試験で10番以内に入れば自転車を手に入れることができると父ちゃんは言った。

So I was very pleased when I got home from school yesterday because I’d come in tenth in the test.
だから、ぼくは昨日、学校から家に戻ったときにとても喜んでいた。テストで10番以内に入っていたからだ。
When Dad heard this, he looked surprised and said, “Well, imagine that!” and Mom hugged me and said [o Dad would go right out and buy me a bike].

Actually I was lucky really, because there were only eleven of us {doing the test}, all the rest of the class were away with colds, and the eleventh was Matthew, {who always comes last anyway}.

I knew [that Dad had been a champion soccer player and swimmer and boxer], but the cyclist was a new one for me.

“Here, I’ll show you,” said Dad, and he got on my bike and started riding around the garden.
「ほらほら、お前に見せてやるよ」と父ちゃんが言って、ぼくの自転車に乗って、庭で乗り回し始めた。
Of course the bike was too small for Dad and he had trouble with his knees {which were somewhere up by his face}, but he managed.
もちろん、自転車は父ちゃんには小さすぎたし、彼［＝父ちゃん］は、どこか顔のそばで高い状態にある膝（ひざ）にてこずっていたが、彼［＝父ちゃん］はなんとかしていた。

“I’ll show you!” Mr. Billings said, and he jumped over the fence.

“Give me that bike,” he said, grabbing the handlebars, but Dad wasn’t letting go of the bike.

I ran after Dad and asked [if I could ride my bike], but he wasn’t listening, because Mr. Billings had started roaring with laughter as he watched Dad, and Dad fell into the flowers.

Mr. Billings said, “I’ve got an idea. We’ll race each other around the block and see [who makes the fastest time]!”

“Certainly not,” said Dad.

And Dad took the bike and went out into the road.

I was beginning to get really fed up, I hadn’t even had one ride on my new bike!

“Right,” said Dad, “we each ride around the block and time it, and the winner is champion. As far as I’m concerned, it’s only a formality; I know the winner already.”

But Mr. Billings didn’t want to give me his watch because he said [o children were always breaking things], so Dad told him [how mean he was] and he gave me his own watch.

Mr. Billings had first go.
ビリングズさんが最初に乗った。
He actually is rather fat, so you could hardly see the bike.

He wasn’t going very fast, and then he turned the corner and disappeared.

When we saw him coming back, he was red in the face and his tongue was hanging out and he was riding in zigzags.

“Well, how long was it?” he asked.

“Why don’t you try to do better instead of making bad jokes?” said Mr. Billings, {who was having trouble with his breathing}.
「どうして、たちの悪い冗談を飛ばすかわりに、よりよくしようとしないのか［→もっと速く走ろうとしないのか］？」とビリングズさんが言ったが、彼は呼吸をすることに問題をかかえていた［→息が苦しそうだった］。
Dad took the bike and started off.

We waited.

I was looking at the watch.

I wanted Dad to win, but the hands of the watch kept going around and it was nine minutes and then almost at once it was ten minutes.
ぼくは父ちゃんに勝ってもらいたかったが、時計の針は回り続け、9分になっていて、それからほとんどすぐに10分になった。
“I’ve won! I’m the champion!” cried Mr. Billings.
「勝った！ おれがチャンピオンだ！」とビリングズさんが叫んだ。

Fifteen minutes later there was still no sign of Dad.
15分後、それでもやはり父ちゃんの影も形もまったくなかった。

“That’s funny,” said Mr. Billings.

“Perhaps we ought to go and see [what’s up].”

Then we saw Dad coming.
そうしたら、ぼくたちは父ちゃんがやってくるのを目にした。

On foot.

He’d torn his trousers, he was pressing a handkerchief to his nose and carrying the bike in his other hand.
彼［＝父ちゃん］はズボンを破いていて、ハンカチを鼻に押しつけていて、もう一方の手で自転車を持っていた。
Its handlebars were all bent, its wheels were twisted and the light was broken.
ハンドルはすっかり折れ曲がり、車輪は捩（ねじ）れていて、ライトは壊れていた。

“Ran into a trash can,” said Dad.
「ゴミ箱に突っ込んだ」と父ちゃんは言った。

The next day I was telling Matthew about it, and he told me [o almost exactly the same thing happened to him with his first bike].
その翌日、ぼくがこのことについてマシューに話していたところ、初めての自転車に関して、ほぼ正確に同じことが彼の身に起こったと彼はぼくに話した。

“Dads―they’re all the same,” said Matthew.

“They’re so careless, and if you don’t watch out, they go breaking people’s bikes and hurting themselves.”
