Dreamtime(対訳)

Dreamtime Australian Aborigines and the Art of Living
Art is not a thing; it is a way.
Elbert Hubbard

0.
Some ancient art by “primitive” people looks very modern.
How can that be?
John Kelly, an assistant language teacher from Australia, gives a presentation to his class about Australian Aboriginal art.
1.01
Today I would like to show you some Aboriginal art.
The wordsAborigineandAboriginalrefer to the native people of Australia.
Although most Aboriginal people today live in the same way as other Australians, about 10 percent continue to live in the huge desert areas in the central part of Australia.
This is [where they have created highly artistic paintings for thousands of years].
Let’s take a look at some of the examples.
1.02
Painting 1 is a dot painting.”
It is believed [that dot paintings are a kind of map].
Native people of Australia drew figures on the ground to show [where animals, food plants, and water were].
1.03
Painting 2 is a bark painting.”
It has been painted on bark.
Here we see spirits, birds, and animalsall {painted in fine lines}.
The shadow effect is produced by drawing crossing lines.
1.04
Painting 3 is an example of an “X-ray painting.”
You can see 1the bones and 2insides of animals as in an X-ray, so that you can tell [which parts of the animal can be eaten].
1.05
It is surprising [that these painting techniques have been used by Australian Aborigines for thousands of years].
There are many other painting techniques {created by Aboriginal painters}.
Why have they continued this tradition of painting for such a long time?
2.01
The answer lies in the fact {that the paintings tell stories about 1[where the Aborigines came from], 2[who they are], and 3[how they live]}.
They tell their people’s history, traditions, laws, and wisdom in the form of [what they callDreamtime.”]
Not having a writing system of their own, Aborigines have passed down the Dreamtime stories through 1word of mouth, 2paintings, 3songs, and 4dances.
They continue to sing and dance for several hours, or for several days, or even for several weeks.
Their respect for nature, {which is the basis of their Dreamtime stories,} reminds us of the wisdom {that we tend to forget today}.
Dreamtime has little to do with our ordinary ideas of time.
Past, present, and future all combine, just as in our dreams.
Dreamtime is reality for Aborigines and it continues to shape their world.
To them, the world is an unbroken circle.
2.02
We may find it strange [that they think of reality this way].
We tend to believe [that the world is made up of separate things].
Yet, modern science suggests [that things are somehow combined] and [that reality is not so clear-cut as we believe].
In other words, the very old ideas of the “primitive” people are very close to those of modern science.
3.01
Now let’s take a brief look at the history of Aborigines.
In 1988, Australia celebrated 200 years of settlement, but Aborigines had little to celebrate.
Discoveredaround 1700, Aborigines were 1pushed out of their land, 2calledsavages,” and even 3killed.
3.02
Between 1910 and 1971, the government took thousands of Aboriginal children from their families and brought them up in white communities.
It was hoped [that they would be educated andcivilized.”]
However, this plan ended up only destroying their traditions.
The fact [that they were cut off from the land] meant a lot for them, because the land is [where their people’s spirit and soul had been grounded].
3.03
Archie Roach, a popular Aboriginal musician, sings about the pain of this “Stolen Generation”:
The sun is round, the moon is roundyour life journey goes round in a circle too.
But, if the circle is broken, then you don’t know [which way to go].
Youre drifting in space, youre nowhere.
3.04
In recent years there has been a movement {to bring Aborigines and other Australians together}.
Since the 1970s large areas of land have been returned to Aboriginal control.
Uluru, or Ayers Rock, is an example.
As more Australians come to learn and appreciate Aboriginal culture, they want to compensate Aborigines for [what happened in the past].
3.05
Aboriginal art can be seen as a way {to 1overcome pain and discrimination and 2express the meaning of life}.
It is an art of living.
