A Tour of the Brain 対訳

A Tour of the Brain
1.1
Men's and women's brains are different.
New researchhoweverchanges some old myths about [who's good at what].
What is the latest science on the differences between men's and women's aptitudesanyway?
Is it true [that men are better at science and math]?
Or is it foolish to ask such a question today{when many scientists believe [that 1living environment2motivation and 3opportunity are more important than gender differences}]?
1.2
Thanks to new medical technologyresearchers now can take images of the brain (as it works and grows).
Sandra Witelson{who is a well-known researcher on the subject,} says, "In recent yearsthere has been a large increase in the number of studies {that have found differences between men's and women's brains}.  It's very exciting."
1.3
It turns out [that many of those differences don't seem to change our behavior].
Others do ― in ways {we might not expect}.
1.4
(Whatever differences we find | between men's and women's brains,) most scientists agree [that both biology and social conditions play a part in 1behavior as well as 2success in various fields of study].
2.1
Most studies agrees [that men's brains are about 10% bigger than women's].
But size does not predict intelligence(as was once thought).
Men and women perform similarly on intelligence tests.
2.2
We can see differenceshoweverin [how their brains work].
(When men and women are given a certain tasksuch as 1solving a math problem or 2reading a book,women tend to use various areas of the brain together to complete the task.
On the other handmen tend to use or focus on only one area of the brain according to the particular task.
The same pattern occurs (when men and women experience feeling of 1anger or 2sadness).
2.3
Alsowe can find differences in [how men's and women's brains develop].
Most areas of the brain mature faster in girls.
Especially the areas for 1spoken language2writing and 3distinguishing faces mature several years earlier in girls.
Certain areas mature faster in boys.
In particularthe areas for 1mechanical reasoning2visual targeting and 3spatial reasoning seem to mature four to eight years earlier in boys.
2.4
But after some time(when our brains are fully developed,) certain aptitudes may not be that different between males and females.
It just depends on [when you test them].
3.1
There are still some questionshowever{that need to be answered}.
For examplewhy are boys and menon averagebetter at turning 3-D objects in their minds?
As for girls and womenhow do we explain [why they tend to have better 1language and 2social skills]?
The most surprising differences may be outside the brain.
3.2
"(If you have a man and a woman {looking at the same landscape},) they see totally different things," says Leonard Saxa physician and psychologist.
"Women can see colors and textures {that men cannot see |}.
They hear things {o men cannot hear |}and they smell things {o men cannot smell |}."
The 1eyes2earsand 3noses, {which are doorways to the brain,} affect brain development from birth on.
But Sax says [o this does not mean [o women are better than men at perception]].
It just means [o our species is diverse on a practical levelmaking it more likely to survive].
"The female will remember the 1color and 2texture of a particular plant and be able to warn people (if it's poisonous).
A man will be more alert to [what is moving in the area]," he says.
"Which is better?  You need both."
4.1
In the early 1990sSax evaluated boys {suffering from ADHD} and found [thatindeedthey were not paying attention in school].
But (the more he studied brain differences,) the more he became convinced [that the problem was with the schools].
Sometimes the solution was simple.
He moved some of the boys{whose hearing was not as good as the girls',} to one of the front desks.
Other timesthe solution was more difficult.
4.2
"Previouslythought [that single-sex education was old-fashioned]," he says.
But coed schools do more harm than goodhe decided(when they teach boys and girls (as if their brains mature at the same time)).
"(Whenever you ask children to do something {not appropriate for their age and gender},they will either fail or come to dislike the subject," he says.
"By age 12you will have girls {who don't like science} and boys {who don't like reading}.
(If it turns out [that Staking into account sex differences in education is helpful])there are certainly many ways to carry it out."
4.3
"It's much better," says Sandra Witeson, "for people to 1understand [what the differences are]2act on their strong points and 3be aware of their weak points."
5.1
(As research has shown,) the area of the brain {used for mechanical reasoning} appears to mature earlier in boys.
Thereforegenerally speakingyoung girls may have a disadvantage in learning 1science or 2mathematics in their younger days.
5.2
But there is a lot of evidence [that (whenever young women are motivated and encouraged,) they become quite good at science].
Todayin Iceland and Swedengirls perform better than boys in 1math and 2science.
In Sweden the gap is widest in the distant region in the north.
"That may be [because women want to move to the big cities {farther south}{where they would need to compete for high-tech jobs}]," says a Danish professor.
"Men are focused on local 1hunting, 2fishing and 3forestry opportunities."
5.3
How can we explain a survey {that found eighth-grade girls performing better than boys in math in 22 countrieswith boys outscoring girls in only three nations}?
The answer may be difficult to findbut as one teacher in Iceland puts it, "There may be differences between the gendersbut by far S[what's most important] is motivationnot aptitude."
It may also be about 1expectations2encouragementand above all3individual effort.
