Dr. Carlo Urbani was born in a small town in Italy.

(While working in a hospital in the town,) Urbani often went to Africa as a member of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), {through which he gave needy children medical care |}.

Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Bordersis an international non-governmental humanitarian organization {known for its emergency medical aid to people {affected by armed conflictepidemics and natural or man-made disasters}}.
メドゥサン=サン=フロンティエール(国境なき医師団)は、武力衝突・流行性伝染病・自然災害・人災による影響を受けた人々に対する緊急医療援助で知られている人道主義に基づく非政府国際組織である。
MSF was created in 1971 by a small group of French doctorsand it is now governed by a private non-profit association.

Each yearabout 3,000 MSF volunteer staff participate in more than 3,800 aid missions.

It was around noon on March 32003 [that Urbani received a call from the Hanoi French Hospital].

A doctor asked for Urbani's helpsaying, "A tourist from Hong Kong is now in serious condition.

This was the beginning of Urbani's struggle with the disease.

Despite all of his examinationshe could not discover the cause of the disease.

"This is not [what we know as the flu]," said Urbani.

Urbani wondered [if the patient had met with people from GuangdongChina]he had heard [that people there were in a panic because of the outbreak of "mysterious pneumonia."]

Urbani and his colleagues did their best to keep the disease from spreadingbut their efforts were completely ineffective.

He sat by their beds and tried to give them hope.

On March 11the WHO specialist in infectious diseases {who Urbani had been waiting for} arrived in Hanoi.

The specialistDr. Oshitaniwas Urbani's boss.
押谷医師という専門家はウルバニの上司だった。
(Having shown him around the hospital,) Urbani abruptly asked him, "(If you had this disease,what would you do |?"

Oshitani answered, "guess [o the best thing to do is to get out of Hanoi and go somewhere {where you can get proper treatment}].

What is an infectious disease?

Infectious diseases are caused by a biological agent such as a virusbacterium or parasite.

People have fought against infectious diseases throughout history.
人々は歴史を通じて伝染病と闘ってきた。
The Plague{known as the Black Death,} broke out in Europe in the Middle Ages.

Urbani's death brought Oshitani to tears.
