The Great Journey 対訳

THE GREAT JOURNEY

1.1

(When the villagers saw me, they asked with a friendly smile on their faces,) Which river do you come from?

The Tamagawa, I answered.

Is the Tamagawa as big as this river?

Can you catch many fish there?”

1.2

At that time, the villagers didn’t even have their own names.

Isn’t it inconvenient [that you don’t have names]?”

Not at all.

But (if you need them), give us names.”

I named them Tochan, Kachan, and so on.

1.3

That was the time {when I first met Machigenga people}.

They live in the Amazon jungle of Peru.

(When I stayed with them,) I felt [that they were distant relatives of the Japanese people].

Their looks are similar to ours.

1.4

I knew [o we are both Mongoloid].

How did we end up living on opposite sides of the world?”

After this, I became more interested in the history of humankind.

This motivated me to start my new adventure.

2.1

The first ancestors of humankind were born in eastern Africa about six million years ago.

Over a million years ago, their descendants moved out of Africa into Asia.

Some of them kept on traveling to the east into North America, and finally reached the southern end of South America.

This journey of over 50,000 kilometers is called theGreat Journey.”

I decided to follow the route of the Great Journey in reverse.

In December 1993, I started off from the southern end of South America.

2.2

On my Great Journey, I wanted to try to experience nature as our ancestors did.

That was one reason {why I traveled at all times on foot, by bike, by boat, and sometimes on skis}.

2.3

One of my most difficult times occurred in Patagonia.

(When I was crossing a snowfield,) I was hit by a violent storm.

It lasted for days.

One night, my heavy sled was blown away.

Luckily I found it three kilometers away the next morning.

3.1

My journey was more than just traveling from South America to Africa.

I stayed in villages and towns along the way.

By experiencing the daily life of the local people, I learned some important lessons for us today.

Many of these people are still living in harmony with nature as ancient people did.

3.2

For example, in the northern part of Kamchatka, the Koryak people keep reindeer in the traditional way.

Reindeer are the source of life to them.

They use every single part of a reindeer.

The hides are turned into clothes, and the meat, blood and organs give them protein and vitamins.

The bones are given to the dogs.

Nothing is wasted.

3.3

During the journey, I experienced 1the heat of summer and 2the cold of winter {that people in the wilderness did long ago}.

And finally, on February 10, 2002, I reached Olduvai in Tanzania.

That’s the place {where the first true evidence of an ape-man was discovered}.

4.1

Japanese people had O1a Great Journeyof their own, O2a kind of branch from the Great Journey.

Some scientists think [that we took three different paths about 30,000 to 40, 000 years ago to reach the islands of Japan].

I decided to follow each of these three paths as a new adventure.

4.2

This is my secondGreat Journey,” (even if it’s much shorter than my first).

I want to explore the various origins ofJapaneseness {that still exist among people in different locations}.

4.3

On July 8, 2004, I started to take thenorthernroute.

By this route, people came to Japan from Siberia via Sakhalin Island.

Like my previous journey, I am traveling only on foot or by bike and interacting with the local people {o I meet}.

I am taking DNA samples from some people during the trip.

I want to compare these with samples from Japanese people.

My journey will be completed in five years.

I will be 60 years old then.
